Details
The ocean and its sailing ships have fascinated me since childhood. This piece explores a progressive approach to modern design by combining uncompromising traditional craftsmanship with the abstraction of everyday industrial and natural forms. The Glass Chair is an experimental creation that pushes glass to its physical limits while maintaining strength and functionality.
The frame is crafted from locally grown Indian teak, a durable yet flexible wood traditionally used in fine furniture. Individual panes of glass are carefully inserted within the curved wooden frame. The backrest and seat resemble billowing sails, joined and supported by a solid teak mast. By placing the outer surface of the glass under tension, both the seat and backrest are able to support an occupant's weight without breaking. More than just a chair, this design is intended to inspire curiosity, excitement, and admiration rather than simply evoke nostalgia.
